DURING A DISASTER
Wear loose-fitting clothes that are not warm
Drink plenty of water
Rest and remain in a shaded place
Conserve the use of water, do not waste
Give first aid to those who require it (many may suffer from extreme heat)
Reduce recreational activities
Consult a doctor if there are signs of cough, flu, sore eyes and throat
Do not allow water to stagnate as this encourages mosquitoes to breed and diseases to spread
Do not carry out open burning
Ensure there are no empty bottles, tins or glass in dry bushes
Conserve Water
The supply of water becomes the main problem during a drought
Conserve the use of water, do not use it as generously as before a drought
Use water only when necessary
Allow excess water to flow into the ground which will help the recycling of water
During water rationing, prepare large containers to store water supplied by the authorities
ACTING DURING AN EMERGENCY
Prepare an emergency kit and keep it in a place known to every family member
Ensure family members know how to turn off the main electricity switch and the water and gas supply valves in the home
Teach children how to contact the authorities in the event of an emergency
EMERGENCY KIT
Battery-powered radio (small and portable), torch, shoes, raincoat, whistle, utility knife, extra batteries and bulbs
First aid kit with medication
Tinned or packed food (include a tin opener)
Drinking water (plain water is recommended)
Money, especially coins (for use of the public telephone)
Important documents (birth certificate, insurance policy, identity card, etc) placed in a waterproof container
