BEFORE A FLOOD

  Obtain information on flooding in your area.
  Be familiar with the existing flood warning system.
  Ensure drainage is not obstructed.
  Check sewage channel and ensure it is properly sealed.
  Obtain information on evacuation centre and disaster relief centre.


When a Flood is about to Happen
  Turn on the radio for announcements of the disaster
  Take in furniture or equipment that is outside the house
  Keep electrical appliances in a high place
  Fill clean large containers with fresh water and store in a high place
  Place important documents in a waterproof container, ready for evacuation
  Be prepared to turn off electrical switches and the main water and gas supply valves
  Inform your neighbours and be prepared to evacuate

DURING A FLOOD

Indoors
  Listen to radio announcements
  Be prepared with your emergency kit
  When directed by the authorities to evacuate, do so immediately

Outdoors
  Head for a high and safe place away from an open area, the river and drains
  Do not wander around flooded areas, nor approach in a rowing boat
  Do not come into contact with fallen cables or wires
  Monitor children so they do not play in flooded areas, the river, drains or mining pools
  Do not drink flood water

Inside a vehicle
  Do not press on in a flooded area, turn back
  Should your vehicle stall and fail to start, get out, lock the vehicle and head for a safe place

During evacuation
  Evacuate immediately when directed
  Evacuate early before flood waters rise or during the day when it is less difficult and safer
  Follow the pre-determined evacuation route as short cuts may be obstructed or dangerous


AFTER A FLOOD

  Listen to radio announcements or await the directions of the authorities, do not return home before being directed so
  Assist your neighbours or the infirm and disabled
  Examine your house for any cracks or sediments which may be dangerous
  Do not enter your house if it is still flooded and beware of hidden dangers

When entering your house
  Wear shoes or slippers
  Check the walls, floor, doors and windows for defects
  Check the ceiling and wall plaster which may have cracks and may collapse
  Look for signs of the presence of poisonous and dangerous animals
  Remove debris with a piece of wood

Check for hazards
  Check water or gas pipes which may have cracked or burst
  Check submerged electrical wires and appliances
  Check for the presence of flammable liquids which may have flowed into the house (paraffin, petrol, diesel, etc)
  Dispose of any food that has been submerged or come into contact with flood water including tinned food
  Check the septic tank for damage to avoid biological hazards
  Immediately report to the authorities the damages to public utilities (supply of water, gas and electricity)
